Taking care of what the Trojans are in command of is a cornerstone of the program.
The first team activity after every game is weight lifting on Monday morning, and today’s session carries added emotional weight.
But it’s also an opportunity for the Trojans to live out an important belief in the program.
A key philosophy in the USC football program is taking care of the things you can control and not worrying about the things you can’t.
The hour-long weight-lifting sessions are one of those opportunities for the players. This morning, they can control how they work in the basement of Heritage Hall with the strength and conditioning staff. Later, they can control how they practice on Howard Jones field.
And on Saturdays throughout the rest of this season, the Trojans still have power over their own destiny in the Pac-10. The players and coaches in Heritage Hall still have command over the program’s annual goal of winning the conference and going to the Rose Bowl.
It’s a calming influence and one that controls this team.
And controls this program’s success.
