A new must-see video is up!
09-07-2007 10:59 am
You’ve got to see the newest video from USCRipsIt.com. This one will make you laugh as Coach Carroll reminisces about one of his early coaching memories from the ’80s.
You can find it in the USCRipsIt.com video player on the site's home page.
Bye week? Hello, weekend!
09-07-2007 10:49 am
While coaches recruit during the weekend, the Trojans have two full days off and don’t report back until weights on Monday morning. Meetings and practice will be back to normal Monday, with the team meeting starting at 2:15 and practice at 4 (though it could be as late as 4:30).
As the Trojans go, so goes USCRipsIt.com, so we'll be enjoying the bye weekend as well.
If you're bored without USC football, remember you can fill the void with some exciting football at the Coliseum at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

An early morning for all
09-07-2007 9:49 am
Besides the coaches and players, here’s a look at the support staffers who reported to work early Friday:
- The student managers started setting up shortly after 5 a.m.
- The athletic trainers arrived at 4:45 a.m. before the training room opened at 5 a.m.
- The student trainers came to work around 5:15 a.m.
- And, of course, the video operators, strength staff, equipment managers also came to work bright and early Friday morning.
Dispatch from Howard Jones

Thoughts from Friday’s practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt.com…
- Even though it started at 6:15 a.m., practice still featured hard hits and speed from all facets of the team.
- Wide receiver Patrick Turner ran routes and caught passes in individual drills, but did not participate in team periods. Coach Carroll said he should return to all drills Monday.
- The session ended with a 46-yard field goal from Joe Houston, who had to fend off verbal taunts from his teammates to simulate a real game. It took six tries by four different kickers to make the field goal to end the practice, with each miss causing players to moan as they eagerly hoped to get off the field.
- After the 90-minute practice, players hustled off to their 8 a.m. classes and will have Saturday and Sunday off. Practices, meetings and weight lifting resume Monday for the Trojans.
Good morning! Or is it night?
09-07-2007 5:56 am
It’s pitch dark outside, the coaches are here, the players are strolling in and practice is 20 minutes from beginning. It’s a great morning to be a Trojan.
Early morning ahead
09-06-2007 6:40 pm
Friday’s practice is set for 6:15.
That’s a.m., not p.m., so the world will get turned upside down for some surrounding the football team. Some coaches might sleep in their Heritage Hall offices, while the student managers have to begin setting up the field at 5:30 a.m. Athletic trainers, equipment managers and video staffers all will report for work earlier than normal — several hours earlier, for some. And while players are usually sleeping, they’ll instead be hitting the field for a practice before they get the rest of the weekend off.
Wind sprints
09-06-2007 6:32 pm
Ever so energetic, Coach Carroll sprinted down the field alongside the kickoff team during kickoff return drills during Thursday’s practice.
Kicking some grass
09-06-2007 6:28 pm
To get more acquainted with the artificial turf at Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium, the kickers, punters and snappers got some work in on Cromwell Field’s FieldTurf for about 30 minutes in the middle of Thursday’s practice.
Since those positions are some of the most highly affected by the turf, they stepped away from their teammates at Howard Jones to become more acclimated with the difference between real and artificial grass.
Medical watch
09-06-2007 6:24 pm
Mark Sanchez ran the second-team offense full-time Thursday, throwing exceptionally sharp and hard but still not taking snaps to protect his thumb. Coach Carroll praised the quarterback for his second straight strong practice.
Tailbacks Hershel Dennis and Marc Tyler again impressed on their second days back to contact, Carroll said.
Tailback Broderick Green, who had surgery on his injured foot Tuesday, returned to watch practice and sat in a motorized cart along the sidelines.
Dispatch from Howard Jones
09-06-2007 6:23 pm
Thoughts from Thursday’s practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt.com…
- The play of the day happened to be the last play of the day, as linebacker Michael Morgan had an incredible leaping one-handed interception in the end zone that was very reminiscent of Vidal Hazelton’s touchdown on Saturday.
- Tailback Joe McKnight ran with the wide receivers during individual and 1-on-1 drills to give him more pass-catching experience against cornerbacks.
- Cornerback Cary Harris had a phenomenal diving interception during 7-on-7 drills.
- The recorded crowd noise made a reappearance, and this time, it was downright deafening. The volume was turned up especially loud on third downs and when the Trojan offense was near either end zone.
- The usual black-shirted service teams were replaced by the second-stringers, giving the first-team offense and defense stiffer competition during the scout team period.
- A Kansas City Chiefs scout was in attendance.
Off to work
09-06-2007 4:01 pm
It’s time to head out to the practice field, where the Trojans are in half pads today. We’ll return soon with a full report.

Meet and greet
09-06-2007 2:41 pm
The kickoff team is in the middle of its special teams meeting right now, and the rest of the team will meet in about five minutes for the team meeting. Practice is at 4 p.m. today, and it's the second-to-last practice before a weekend off.
And that last practice before the weekend off? Um yeah, that’s at 6:15 tomorrow morning.

Easy does it

Bye weeks mean the activity around the USC football office can be especially slow and quiet. The most exciting thing to happen in the office on a day like today is the arrival of the FedEx guy.
Coaches are embedded in meetings all day and the usual pregame buzz is noticeably missing, as the next time the Trojans hit the field is nine days away.
But the Trojans can’t complain too much. Bye weeks do allow players to heal and coaches to catch up on the game plan and get extra rest, so there are several positive benefits to the off week.
Coach profile: Demetrice Martin
09-06-2007 11:24 am
Each week, USCRipsIt.com will feature one coach or office staff member in a personal profile, giving you a glimpse at the off-the-field personality and character of the Trojans.
Today, secondary graduate assistant Demetrice Martin gets his turn in the spotlight.
Fun and games
09-06-2007 9:46 am
USC’s offense and defense have always been competitive against one another, but it has reached new levels among the coaches lately.
Gumballs are the name of the game now.
Yes, gumballs.
Passing game coordinator John Morton and secondary graduate assistant Demetrice Martin both deeply enjoy banana-flavored gumballs from the gumball machine outside Coach Carroll’s office. Problem is, every time they return to get more, there’s fewer and fewer of their favorite flavor.
The rivalry reached a peak this morning when the two approached the gumball machine at the same time and proceeded to lightheartedly argue about stealing the yellow gumballs from the machine.
Efforts to obtain an order of all yellow gumballs have not been successful so far. If you are a gumball manufacturer and can achieve this unlikely feat, contact USCRipsIt.com. Morton and Martin would greatly appreciate your efforts.

Wonder boy
09-05-2007 8:38 pm
Because it’s a bye week, the coaches got the night off from football to spend time with their families.
Coach Carroll did so a little differently than the other coaches.
Carroll took his wife Glena to the Stevie Wonder concert on Wednesday night, getting to enjoy the music of the famous musician at the Greek Theater.
Three new Trojans
09-05-2007 8:36 pm
Three players were added to the Trojan roster Wednesday:
- Aubey Layno-Moses, a freshman wide receiver from Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
- David Clinco, a redshirt sophomore offensive tackle from Sam Marino, Calif.
- Will Mullen, a redshirt sophomore offensive tackle from Lake Forest, Ill.
Playing games
09-05-2007 6:53 pm
Following practice, Coach Pete Carroll and son Brennan Carroll (tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator) played a game of catch, and it turned into a contest to see how long the two could throw the ball. Both tossed the football longer than 50 yards.
“I’m just trying to throw my age,” the 55-year-old Carroll joked.
All eyes on fashion
09-05-2007 6:47 pm
Safety Will Harris made his own unique fashion statement Wednesday.
Instead of the normal white socks, Harris wore ’70s-style USC socks during practice. Check them out:

Putting in overtime
09-05-2007 6:40 pm
After practice, Mark Sanchez and John David Booty spent extra time throwing with receiver David Ausberry on varying routes. When Ausberry retired to the locker room, the quarterbacks made the most of the circumstances and began throwing to student manager Matt Burkhard.
Moving on up
09-05-2007 6:39 pm
No Nerf balls today.
Mark Sanchez returned to throwing a real football Wednesday as he was a signal caller for 7-on-7 drills. He didn’t take any snaps as a protective measure for his healing thumb (7-on-7 drills do not have the center-quarterback exchange).
Coach Carroll said he hopes to have Sanchez back to full speed by next week.
Dispatch from Howard Jones
09-05-2007 6:34 pm
Thoughts from Wednesday’s practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt.com…
- The defense snagged an early win on Turnover Wednesday, as freshman tailback Marc Tyler fumbled during the 9-on-7 running drill in the first half of practice. Safety Kevin Ellison picked up the fumble by Tyler, who was in his first day in pads, and returned it for a touchdown.
- Piped-in crowd noise filled the air at practice as USC prepares for the loud crowd at Nebraska.
- The Trojans practiced on a re-sodded Howard Jones field instead of the artificial surface on Cromwell Field, but they will return to the FieldTurf several times before next week’s game.
We're talking about practice
09-05-2007 3:40 pm
Practice got knocked back 15 minutes this afternoon, so the team will be hitting the field at 4 p.m for a 4:15 p.m. practice. We’ll return after with a report.

More info on the Saturday's Angel City Classic
09-05-2007 1:43 pm
Here's a press release from A Better LA and their connection to Saturday's Angel City Classic at the Coliseum:
USC head coach Pete Carroll’s non-profit group aimed at empowering change and curbing urban violence, A Better L.A., and Bo Taylor’s Unity One have partnered with Farmers Insurance to elevate awareness of higher educational opportunities for at-risk youth at the Farmers Insurance Angel City Classic on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Exposition Park.
A Better L.A. will be on site on the southeast side of the Coliseum just next to the Expo Center (Exposition Park Intergenerational Community Center). The Expo Center, ABLA, and Unity One are using their relationships in partnership with the community to attract thousands of young people to Saturday’s event. The game is a phenomenal opportunity for young people to experience higher education at its best and to encourage them to go to college.
Coach Carroll, ABLA, and Unity One will gather in front of the Expo Center to welcome and cheer on the teams as they enter the Coliseum at 10:00 a.m.
The event showcases the talents of two of the nation’s most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) — the North Carolina A&T State Aggies and the Prairie View A&M University Panthers. In addition to the 2:30 p.m. football game between the schools, there will be Greek step shows (such as those showcased in the hit movie Stomp The Yard) and the much anticipated Battle of the Bands.
All members of the community and media are welcome to stop by our site to learn more about A Better LA and the group’s initiatives.

Turnover Wednesday, through Coach Carroll's eyes
09-05-2007 10:56 am
Each day throughout game weeks, Coach Carroll will share his thoughts on the day’s theme. Wednesdays mean it’s “Turnover Wednesday” around Trojan football. Here are his words:
“Even though it’s a bye week, there will continue to be a turnover emphasis for us today. We need improvement after last week with turnovers. We weren’t successful on either side. So there will be a big competition today for that between the offense and defense.
“And as we start to work on the game plan for Nebraska, we’re going to highlight some young guys and give them an opportunity to improve their roles and increase their chances to play. Guys like Butch Lewis, Joe McKnight, Ronald Johnson, Chris Galippo and Malcolm Smith will all get extended opportunities to play with the top groups so they can get more comfortable.”
It's almost here!
09-05-2007 8:24 am
The “Do You Love It?” video, which got rave reviews last week, is going back up from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Make sure you can get to the USCRipsIt.com video player to watch this special clip used in a team meeting during training camp!

The Trojan coaching staff just gathered for the morning meeting in the “War Room.” The day has officially begun for the USC football team.

Coming from down under
09-04-2007 6:21 pm
The Australian Cyclones, an American football club team primarily out of Sydney, attended Tuesday’s practice and got a special pep talk from Coach Carroll following the practice.
With 25 players and three coaches, the Cyclones are on a weeklong tour through the western U.S. They attended the BYU-Arizona game Saturday in Provo, Utah, and will go to this Saturday’s UCLA-BYU game at the Rose Bowl. Additionally, they’re scheduled to play an exhibition game against a local junior college Friday night.
Nerf gun
09-04-2007 6:11 pm
Mark Sanchez threw for the first time since his injury nearly three weeks ago, yet it was under slightly different circumstances than normal.
After practice, Sanchez, who’s nursing a fractured thumb, tossed a Nerf football around to get his arm back into shape while still taking good care of his thumb. Perhaps the most incredible aspect of the throwing session was seeing Sanchez throw a lightweight foam ball with the same accuracy, same spiral and same velocity as a normal football.
Dispatch from Tuesday's practice
09-04-2007 6:04 pm
Thoughts from Tuesday’s practice, through the eyes of USCRipsIt.com…
- The Trojans practiced on Cromwell Field because Howard Jones had been recently resodded. Also, the Trojans will have several more sessions on the FieldTurf of Cromwell Field to get more acclimated to the same surface at Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium.
- Tailbacks Marc Tyler and Hershel Dennis returned to practice and ran in nearly all drills.
- There was no service team at the practice, with the first-string offense going against the first-string defense for most of the 90-minute session, which saw players in helmets only (no pads).
- Receiver David Ausberry had a fantastic grab on a deep route along the sideline, even with near-perfect coverage from cornerback Jim Abbott.
- Scouts from both the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams were in attendance.
Moving on up
09-04-2007 4:23 pm

"Do You Love It?" -- It's on its way back!
09-03-2007 3:57 pm
The “Do You Love It?” video we showed for one hour last week is making its much-requested reappearance. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, this special motivating film shown in a team meeting during training camp will be re-posted on USCRipsIt.com.
Be sure to check in to see the 10-minute video at some point in that window.

09-03-2007 3:47 pm
Coaches will begin trickling out of the office over the next few hours but will undoubtedly return first thing Tuesday morning. Players, after two days off, come back for their usual Tuesday mandatory lifting at their choice of one of five different times in the morning.
Then at 2:15 p.m., it’s time for the first team meeting since Saturday’s victory.

Avid film watchers

At Heritage Hall until 2 a.m. Sunday morning, back at work six hours later, and looking over film for hours already today.
We’re talking about the coaches, right?
Not exactly.
The football team’s video operations staff — director Eric Espinoza and assistant Dave Scott — puts in some of the longest, craziest hours for the Trojans. Whether it’s filming practice or a game, editing the film in their Heritage Hall office, obtaining game tapes from USC’s opponents, or collaborating with coaches to make specific reels for meetings, Espinoza and Scott dedicate extensive time to one of the most vital aspects of the Trojans’ daily and weekly preparation.
“I don’t know what we’d do without them,” Coach Carroll said.
It's in the books
09-03-2007 1:35 pm
The aforementioned first extra-point attempt memorializing Mario Danelo will literally never be forgotten.
The subsequent delay-of-game penalty was recorded in the official stats as a tribute to Danelo. That moment in the official play-by-play summary for Saturday’s game reads:
U 1-G I03 PENALTY USC delay of game 5 yards to the UI8.
USC takes penalty in honor of Mario Danelo

In Saturday’s game, the Trojans put in 64 players, including 13 who had never played a game for USC before.
If you missed it...

Whether you missed it or just want to see it again, here is perhaps the most touching tribute in recent sports memory. On USC's first extra-point attempt in the first quarter of Saturday's game, the Trojans lined up without a kicker. Yet Mario Danelo lives on. Here's the clip from the Fox Sports telecast.

Coach Carroll and some of his players, along with the Trojan Marching Band and Song Girls, will visit the USC Women’s and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles on Tuesday morning.
An annual tradition for the Trojans, several players (in their uniforms) and Carroll will get to spend time with dozens of patients at the hospital on USC’s Health Science Campus.
USCRipsIt.com will be there to capture the meaningful visit, so check back after the event for pictures and a full report.
"Labor" Day
09-03-2007 12:39 pm
USC coaches take a literal meaning of “Labor Day.”
As in, they labor on this day.
Coaches reported for an 8 a.m. staff meeting this morning and have been entrenched in film sessions since. The rest of the campus is quiet on this university holiday, but there’s no such thing as a holiday for the Trojan coaching staff — not when the next game is 12 days away.

09-02-2007 12:29 am
It’s 12:30 a.m., a 38-10 victory is in the books, and guess who’s back to work?
Coach Pete Carroll has returned to his office to begin looking over the game film, reclining in his desk chair as he pores over the video from the night. The Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle” plays over his stereo.
Dedication knows no boundaries.

Calling it a night
09-02-2007 12:21 am
Michael McDonald officially took over for John David Booty with 11:11 left in the game. But the decision was made after USC’s last drive of the third quarter, which ended with a 36-yard field goal by David Buehler to give the Trojans a 38-3 lead.
“You’ve had enough,” Carroll said to Booty along the sidelines, with both of them smiling wide.
Carroll then turned to McDonald and said, “Mikey, heat it up, let’s go!”
Roommate shout out
09-02-2007 12:13 am
After wideout Brad Walker’s first career catch in the third quarter, linebacker Keith Rivers excitedly shouted, “That’s my roommate!” He then turned to Clay Matthews Jr., the third member in their apartment, and said with a smile, “That’s our roommate!”
Sounds of halftime
09-02-2007 12:08 am
On the scene in the locker room at halftime, when the Trojans had a 21-0 lead:
- Players sprinted up the tunnel, as is the custom, and many said, “It’s 0-0” and continued to push each other to fight for more in the second half.
- Quarterback John David Booty screamed out, “21 ain’t nothing. We gotta get physical now.”
- As the time ran down in the half, Coach Carroll walked around the room yelling out, “Get ready, let’s go baby.”
- Thomas Williams and Stanley Havili roamed around the locker room encouraging their teammates.
- Carroll spoke short yet poignantly before sending his players out of the locker room for the second half. “We only got two more quarters and that’s it. Let’s get it a little bit better.”
- As the players stormed back down the tunnel to go into the second half, they chanted one of their traditional pump-up mantras, “Yeah, it’s on baby, hoo ha.”
It was then back to work.
So that's what gives him energy
