Competition is the basis of everything for the Trojans, and that statement could not be truer as the team enters Spring Practice 2008.
With several positions losing key starters to the NFL and all positions open for depth chart movement, competition takes center stage for the 15 practices over the next four weeks.
“That’s what Spring Practice is for, it’s to find our competitive spirit and the level of competitiveness that will carry us into the fall,” said Coach Pete Carroll, who’s going into his eighth year with the Trojans. “Every single season, competition has always been the focal point at this time of the year, and it’s going to be as heated as ever this spring.”
Whether it’s the hot-shot quarterback battle, the pursuit of new All-American linebackers to fill in for Sedrick Ellis and Lawrence Jackson or the often-overlooked need for a placeholder, Spring Practice 2008 will be a breeding ground for fierce, relentless competition.
And that’s just the way Carroll and the Trojans like it.
“Competition makes us who we are,” Carroll said. “The battles our players and coaches face day-to-day on the practice field and inside themselves drive this program to higher places.
“And we expect nothing less this spring.”
